The things I need to learn are...

I've learned a lot but there are still SO many things I need to learn! I have a lot of classes to take still. Some things you need to actually experience before you can learn certain things. Once I actually step out into the Graphic Design field I will learn a lot. I also need to learn to balance everything. This quarter was my first time working full-time while going to school full time. I also was battling Depression this quarter. To make things worse my anxiety was very bad as well. Luckily, next quarter I won't be working full-time so I'll have more time for school. Another thing I really have to learn is how to organize. I have horrible organization skills. This class has taught me a lot of things about the field and also things I need to learn.

My career path is...

Within 5 years I can see myself working at a local business as a graphic designer. Most likely designing their website, local ads, flyers and other similar things. Within 10 years I can see myself maybe doing some free-lance work or working at an ad agency. Within 20 years I aspire to work for a company where I can design for magazines. Hopefully big time magazines like Vogue, Seventeen and People: Style Watch. I've always dreamed of being able to create and design catalogues and magazines.

My concepts for my top 3 ideas for the Medalist project.

I have many ideas for designs for this project; however, I'm going to be explaining concepts for the three main ideas I've chosen. I was thinking of designing a piece with bright shapes and/or lines and choosing a quote that I thought would best suit the design. This design is inspired by Bruce Mau. His art like I stated in my previous post is full of interesting shapes, lines, color and type. I really wanted to incorporate that into my design. Another design which was also inspired by Mau is one with a bright and colorful background with swirl shapes. This piece is full of a few different colors that swirl into one another. I also decided on a quote by Mau to put on top. I'm a very big fan of typography so a lot of my pieces usually incorporate text one way or another. For my third design I decided on something which was inspired by one of my other favorite medalists, Abbott Miller. I designed something using type. I created a pattern with using different letters, numbers and color. That was a really fun piece to create.

I am proud of these because...

I am proud of my sketches because I feel they really capture what I got from the artists I chose. I  chose Abbott Miller, Bruce Mau and Jennifer Morla. Abbott Miller's work is very abstract and intriguing. He uses lines, shapes and typography to make designs. Bruce Mau's work is similar in the sense that he uses shapes and lines to create art. His art is a bit more vibrant in color. He uses typography in a lot of his pieces. What stood out to me from Jennifer Morla's art was how she incorporated a lot of floral details into her pieces.

So I've made quite a few sketches. Twenty to be exact. Some of them I integrated flowers. Other sketches were vibrant and quirky while some were darker like Mau's pieces. I hope to end with a final piece that incorporates a bit of all 3 but solely is inspired by one medalist.

I love making art...

My favorite part of making art is that it’s something I’ve created myself. I love that I can produce something that means something to me or has an importance I’m trying to express to the viewers. When I make art I kind of go off into another dimension. I feel content and happy when I get to design and produce something that I’ve thought of. I also love that anything you make is considered art. When it comes to the “one size fits all” saying it can’t be contributed to art. Art is anything and everything. Whether its good or bad it’s considered art. Also, the fact that viewing art can make a person feel so many different emotions is really incredible. It is such a remarkable thing. Without being able to construct art in my life I would feel incomplete. Making art is a fun passion of mine that I am turning into a career. It’s really an amazing thing to be able to be paid for something you love doing. Like the saying goes “Do something you are passionate about and you will never work a day in your life.” I really do love that quote. Another saying I live by is “Create a life you don’t need a vacation from.” I love making art because it brings light to this otherwise dull world. It brings color and emotion to life.

My favorite design period in fashion.

I have to say that my favorite design period when it comes to fashion would have to be the 50’s. There’s never been a design period quite as timeless as the fifties. From the poodle skirts, fedora hats, and leather jackets the styles were flawless. Even though poodle skirts were popular a tighter skirt was also incorporated during the 1950’s. I’m personally a fan because with my hourglass body theses feminine dresses would work well. There were also blouses that were more fitted in the center to broadcast a smaller waist. If you wanted to be more comfortable you could sport a t-shirt type dress, which is casual but pretty at the same time. Men wore bowling shirts and leather motorcycle jackets. Personally, when I see a man rocking these it catches my attention almost instantly.  Also, men sported casual rolled up pants. To me these are so casual and laid back but there’s something about them that attracts me. Women wore their hair with volume and curls. I love that because “the higher the hair, the closer you are to Heaven” ha-ha. Men wore their hair slicked back often. When it comes to the 50’s the style was impeccable and timeless. No time period compares to it.
